The
developer of the LH Housing is the only established organization in
Broward and Miami-Dade Counties committed to long-term housing affordability. The
non-profit corporation protects land to keep housing affordable indefinitely so
that low-income households can afford housing without compromising on quality or
location. The housing project began with a public charrette with
residents of Little Haiti to gain insight on a collective vision for their
dream home and what will be Little Haiti’s first Community Land Trust (CLT) homeownership development.
The challenge was to efficiently develop 13 units in the the small site in the heart of Little Haiti. The aim is the maximization of common neighborhood areas and ht eutilizatino of custom, cost-efficient railing to express a connection with Haiti’s tradition of the custom guardrail ironwork that made its way into recognizable Louisiana architecture and other areas of the Caribbean. Units feature skylights to bring natural light into narrow spaces.
The project secures funding from an equity source that allows competing in South Florida’s market, providing a source of cash to acquire property and complete pre-development, and with founding corporate support.
