Design District. Miami, FL
Peak daytime sun presents a challenge for the now open Paradise Plaza and the adjoining Paseo Ponti in the
Miami Design District. The Future of Shade competition by Sunbrella, a performance textile company, called for entries to design a shade-focused solution. My entry calls upon the rich visual texture of tufting, interacting with the Design District’s status as a playground experience of high-end fashion.
Tufting is a solution for furniture upholstering, and brands like Chanel utilize it in their accesories. When projecting the imagery of tufting, the resulting red, self- cleaning, high-performance membrane canopies project engaging and playful shadows. Further south, the narrow walkway is augmented via tension membrane-clad arches. Fashion runway experiences can be easily envisioned at this venue, inpromptu and otherwise .
