Gradual Growth is an idea for a functional sculpture submitted for the Bass Museum New Monuments call for entries. The invitation asks who or what should be memorialized on a plinth in Miami Beach, in the United States, or globally in 2022. Entrants are invited to explore this question with a work of art that will be on view in Collins Park for approximately 10-12 months each.
My entry calls for an aluminum or wood structure enveloped in a net, housing a beehive that gradually grows, calling attention to the global bee population decline, and posing the question of the capacity of objects to contibute to solutions, instead of merely being products of materials extracted from the earth.
